Her parents misunderstand her and drive her away from the cliff based on their culture and beliefs of ‘ duppies’, unknowingly drawing her closer. Jewel finds comfort on the edge of that very cliff and makes a little place for herself there for whenever she was feeling lonely. The problem that arises from this is that John takes the nickname “bird” more seriously and tries to fly by jumping off a cliff the day that Jewel was born. John was nicknamed Bird by her grandpa as he is always jumping from heights and trying to fly like a bird. Jewel puts the blame on her brother John, or referred to as Bird for all the love and happiness she thinks that is missing from her family. The people of the community walk around her on eggshells and are cautious of her, while her parents and grandpa are too busy wallowing in their own self-pity to pay any attention to Jewel. Bird is about a pre-teen girl, Jewel, who is struggling to find her place in her family and in the people around her as she sticks out like an elephant in the room. The book ‘Bird’ by Crystal Chan, was the only book made by Crystal Chan, a one-book wonder.
